Heatwaves Close Schools in India
Schools throughout India closed on Monday April 20, 2026, due to heatwaves. Students were reminded to drink water every 45 minutes. Kids at school were playing on equipment around 50 degrees celsius. Soon enough, the schools had to stop activities that required students to go outside. Even the Indian government had to set up public cooling zones. The Indian weather forecast warned about the severe heatwaves, which are likely to continue until June. Lots of people in Indian hospitals are suffering from heatstroke and dehydration. The journalist Azadeh Moshiri said, “That’s so hot, and if I touch it – that’s really, really hot.” Azadeh’s comment suggests how the playground equipment was literally scorching, and touching it would cause physical burns or be dangerous for children. Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, “This heat is harsh on all of us, and I urge you all to take as many precautions as possible. Please stay hydrated In weather like this, such kindness goes a long way.” Narendra Modi’s comment was a call to action and how to survive the heatwave. The Monsoon after this heatwave will bring some relief to the people of India, and the people are eagerly waiting for the monsoons so that they can grow food. According to India Today, the monsoons are delayed. Schools in India will also have to cancel some of the holidays and extend school hours to catch up to the missed days of school from the heatwave.
