The Potential Peace Agreement Between the US and Iran
On April 8, 2026, the war between the US and Iran, which has been going on for two months, reached a ceasefire, which is an agreement to temporarily end the fighting. There were some efforts for peace talks recently, but there were many problems. US President Donald Trump has constantly threatened to start bombing Iran again.
In recent days, there has been increasing effort to secure the peace deals. High-ranking officials from both countries are suggesting that the deal is mostly done, but there are slight differences between each countries’ demands.
For example, Trump wants Iran to open up the Strait of Hormuz, often called Iran’s greatest strength, which has been blocking people’s access to the Red Sea. Iran’s government has not yet accepted this part of the deal. Furthermore, roughly 20% of the world’s oil and gas pass through this important strait, which has been closed since the start of the conflict. This closure has skyrocketed fuel prices and has caused problems not just for the US and Iran, but other countries worldwide as well. Many sources say that Iran has been trying to keep the Strait blocked.
Another challenge of the agreement is related to Iran’s nuclear program. Even though Iran is trying to persuade the US that its nuclear program is not intended for war and only for power, the US and many other western countries are still suspicious of Iran and claim that Iran is trying to build a nuclear weapon. Their evidence is that Iran has some dangerous uranium stored, which is a tool for creating nuclear weapons.
The deal comprises in two parts. The first part is for the two countries to stop fighting. Also, the first part expects Iran to open the Strait of Hormuz to the outside world. The details of part two are unknown.
As for the deal itself, the two countries are planning to solve five very important issues. One issue is whether the Strait of Hormuz will be open or not. Second, if Iran’s uranium storage and nuclear missiles will be allowed to be kept. Also, the militant groups from other countries that support Iran need to stop fighting as well. Additionally, Iran’s $25 billion that was blocked by sanctions needs to be released. Last but perhaps the most important, the deal depends on the acceptance of other involved countries, like Israel.
Therefore, many parts of the deal have to be worked out, which is said to occur in the next thirty–to–sixty days. However, according to many protestors, Trump is making a mistake and his ideas for the deal are not equivalent for Iran’s own demands.
The current situation can be described as tense and tricky. If the US and Iran cannot agree to lasting peace, the situation could turn deadly once more. Otherwise, the deal would be a huge success.
