On April 28, 2026, as a gesture of peace, King Charles made his first official state visit as monarch to the United States of America. At the White House, King Charles and his wife were greeted by President Donald Trump and his wife, Melanie Trump, after arriving by plane to Andrews military base. The purpose of this trip was to strengthen the relationship between the United States and England.
Upon landing, the King was gifted with flowers, and a band played both the American and British national anthems. Following that greeting, the two couples had afternoon tea in the White House Green Room. After tea, the king attended a garden party with Royal visitors, that included a total of more than 600 guests. This included celebrities such as British Olympic diver Tom Daley, who currently resides in the United States. Before the end of the day, King Charles got to see a new beehive, shaped and decorated to look like the White House.
The following Tuesday, the king gave a speech to Congress, specifically addressing how America and England have historically experienced disagreements, but have found ways to get past their disputes. No English monarch since Queen Elizabeth II in 1911 had given a formal speech to Congress, showing the rareness of the event. Later in the day of April 28, Trump is expected to also give a speech at the state dinner.
