Nearly 5 Million Social Media Accounts Gone: What This Ban Is Like for Teens
Australia just deleted almost five million social media accounts, and most of them belonged to people under 16 who. The constant use of screens and electronics made the government more aware of the situation. What’s crazy is that the accounts of teenagers disappeared overnight.
The new ru“Online Safety Amendmenassed in late 2024 says teens under 16 aren’t allowed to have social media accounts anymore. So apps started removing accounts they think belong to younger users. Some teens were surprised. Some were annoyed. Some honestly didn’t care that much.
Adults say this is to protect us. They think social media is bad for mental health and causes stress and pressure. And yeah, social media can suck sometimes. There’s a lot of comparison, drama, and people being mean for no reason. It can mess with how you feel about yourself.
But social media isn’t just bad stuff. It’s how a lot of us talk to friends, especially outside of school. It’s where people post drawings, edits, jokes, or random thoughts. For some teens, it’s the only place they feel like they undefined
We can still watch videos without an account, but we can’t post or comment. That kind of feels like being told to sit quietly while everyone else talks. You’re there, but not really part of it.
Some teens are about the ban, while others are already finding ways around it. That probably means the ban isn’t going to work perfectly. Deleting accounts doesn’t suddenly make everything better.
Almost five million accounts being removed isn’t just a number. It’s a lot of teens losing something that mattered to them, even if adults don’t always understand why.
