The Meteors That Lit Up The Sky Of Ohio
On March 17, 2026, a bright meteor zoomed across the northern region of the United States. The space rock traveled across more than ten states.
The meteor was about six feet across and weighed six to seven tons. It came from Lake Erie to Valley City in north and eastern Ohio. The meteor occurred in the early morning, appearing about 50 miles above Lake Erie in Ohio, according to NASA officials. People across Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, and Michigan reported sonic boom.
The American Meteor Society received numerous reports documenting it as a significant fireball rather than a shooting star. Dr. Cooke of NASA described the meteor event as a “mini” explosion. The explosion was intense, yielding energy comparable to 255 tons of TNT.

However, this wasn’t the first meteor that appeared over Ohio in 2026. On February 10, another bright fireball lit up the central Ohio sky, though it did not make a loud sonic boom like the meteor on March 17.

Meteors prove that there are more incredible things that we can learn from outer space, just like astronomical objects.
