US and Israel attack Iran
On February 26th of 2026, America and Israel attacked Iran’s capital Tehran, with the intention of replacing their government and to stop the ’dangerous’ production of nuclear weapons. This terrible strike killed Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, and many other members of Iranian government. Iran has responded with their own drones and missiles, mostly directed towards Israel.
The war was first suggested by Saudi Arabia and Israel, later encouraging President Donald Trump to join them. Israel struck first, launching the first attacks on February 26th. One of the main goals of the attack was to eliminate Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, which has succeeded.
A reason given by President Trump for this attack was to stop the development of ‘dangerous’ and ‘threatening’ nuclear weapons by Iran. Many of the reasons Trump gave are not supported by the facts. He has stated that he wants Iran’s people to take control of the government, which he has not taken any action towards. The attacks have caused widespread damage, injuries, and deaths, mostly of civilians.
Iran claims that one of the missiles has struck a girls school, reportedly killing over a hundred-fifty students. The attacks to Iran quickly caused fighting in the area, taking the lives of many people, including 3 US soldiers.
The United States and Israel continued to attack Iran on February 27th. President Trump states that he thinks the war could go on for a month or more. Additionally, he has encouraged Iran’s soldiers to surrender, and for the people of Iran to take control of the government there. Nobody really knows who will lead Iran after the war eventually ends, except that Khamenei’s son has succeeded him for now. We don’t know how America and Israel expect the war to end. This attack is quite unusual, as it was not triggered by a threat from Iran. It is not a war that is necessary to protect a country, but a war of choice that could have been very easily avoided.
The opinions of other countries over this topic have been quite varied, with support as well as strong disagreement. Many other countries were unhappy with Iran’s government at the time, but still do not support the war. These countries include, the UK, Germany, and France. Others, like Australia, supported the actions of the US and Israel.
Many war experts see the actions of the US and Israel as illegal under law. Other illegal government action has also happened quite recently. Earlier this year, President Trump chose to attack Venezuela and hold their president hostage, which was strongly believed by many reporters and government members to be illegal. The attack on Iran also seems to go against US law, as it says that the President does not hold the power to declare war. Instead, that power is held by the US Congress. Many Congress members are unhappy with President Trump, as he took action without asking for the approval of the Congress. Congress is expected to discuss the situation in the near future.
