Austin Appelbee, A Young Hero That Saved His Family

The 13-year-old Austin Appelbee went on a beach adventure with his family on January 30, 2026. They expected a fun day on the water, but instead, he was in a life-or-death challenge.

He and his family were on a kayak and paddleboards. Then the weather changed. The waves drove them far away from the beach. So Austin’s mother, Joanne, had to make a difficult decision. She told Austin to swim to shore and get help. Austin swam about 2.5 miles (4 km), while facing strong waves. Then he ran about 1.2 miles (2 km) to his family’s accommodation and used his mother’s phone to call emergency services. He then passed out from exhaustion. The emergency services then helped his family get back. Austin was a hero who saved his entire family. Austin’s bravery was heroic.
