The Winter Storm “Fern” Hit US and Canada
On January 2026, the enormous winter storm “Fern” hit the US with low temperatures and huge amounts of ice and snow. It blew from the Mexico border all the way into Canada.
Records show that in Boston, the snow was as high as 60 centimeters, and in Minnesota, the temperature was less than -46°C. Many stores were “robbed” by civilians trying to survive this historic winter storm.
The weather was extremely cold. “Negative 50°F (negative 45.6°C) wind chills in the Plains, and subfreezing temperatures all the way down to the Gulf Coast pose a life-threatening risk this weekend, especially where snow or ice cause power outages,” The Weather Channel reported in a social media post.
As of January 2026, more than 100 people died because of the storm, most of them died from hypothermia, traffic accidents, and illnesses that could have been caused by the storm. The Red Cross built a lot of warm shelters in many states that are in distress and gave blankets to the needy people for free. However, in New York, around 10 homeless people died on the street.
Many airline companies, including Delta Airline, United Airlines, and American Airlines, canceled their flights. “As the winter storm system moves east, current forecasts indicate significant snowfall in Oklahoma and accumulating ice throughout Northern Texas beginning Friday evening,” Delta Airline said in a statement posted on January 22. “Due to these expected conditions, flight cancellations are necessary at select airports in North Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisiana and Tennessee to ensure the safety of our customers and people.”
From January 23 to 27, over 13,000 flights were canceled. Surprisingly, on January 25 alone, about 7,000 flights were canceled and about 20,000 flights were delayed because of the storm.
Not only air traffic but also many public services were negatively impacted by the extreme weather. “In many places across the US and Canada, universities, libraries, museums, some businesses, and many public services were closed on Monday. Many areas canceled school or switched to remote learning.” NFK (News For Kids) reported in the article “undefined” on January 27, 2026.
