Surprising Volcano Eruption in Ethiopia
On November 23, 2025, a surprising volcanic eruption happened in a remote place in Ethiopia. The Hayli Gubbi volcano erupted for the first time in its history.
Hayli Gubbi is a shield volcano, which means the volcano has a flat shape and usually eruptions are very calm, they last up to a few months and can travel 10s of kilometers. This eruption is surprising because there are a lot of cracks in the region, butthis is the first time Hayli Gubbi has erupted in recorded history! Of course, there is the possibility that because the region where Hayli Gubbi is located is very remote, there could be unrecorded eruptions. This time it was recorded because clouds of ash rose to 14 kilometers , and planes had to be canceled and rerouted.
Abhishek Dey from undefined says, “Aircraft operations have been disrupted as a result of the ash, with Air India cancelling 11 flights, while carriers such as IndiGo, Akasa Air and KLM also reportedly affected.” Julia Jacobo from ABC News also says, “Air traffic controllers as far as India were bracing for possible flight disruptions as a result of the drifting ash cover, according to reports.”
