Rare Faberge Egg Sells for Record £22.9 Million at Auction
The Winter Egg, a diamond studded crystal egg created by the famous jeweler Carl Faberge, sold for £22.9 million, almost £23 million, at Christie’s Auction House in London on December 2nd, 2025.
This famous egg was sold for such a high price due to its extreme rarity. These eggs were crafted with rock crystal, using very impressive skill and thousands of precious diamonds, platinum, and other materials. Each one has a very unique theme, which could explain why the bidder paid so much for an egg.
Another possible reason is due to its historical significance. Faberge eggs are known for their detailed, unique, and beautiful designs, along with their hidden surprises. More than 50 of these eggs used to belong to Russia’s Royal family between 1885 to 1917. The Winter Egg was given to the mother of Russia’s last emperor. Over time, some of these eggs were lost, which is why these eggs sell now for such a high price. Currently, most of the remaining 43 imperial Faberge eggs are in museums and only 7 are left in private hands.
Carl Faberge carved the Winter Egg from clear quartz and decorated it with 4,500 diamonds. He engraved a frost design on the interior, giving off a winter glowing vibe. Rose cut diamonds and platinum snowflake motifs are on the exterior. The egg opens up to reveal a tiny basket of quartz flowers.
The Winter Egg was sold to a bidder for £22,896,000 at the Christie’s auction house, breaking the previous record for the sale of a Faberge Egg by over £13 million!
