Winner of Fat Bear Week

When the weather gets warmer and it stops snowing, bears lumber out of their caves. They haven’t eaten for weeks, so they are starving. They know that this is a good time for salmon. That’s why they start trudging towards the river. What they don’t know is that they are being watched. There were hidden cameras and many people were watching.

Katmai National Park has hosted Fat Bear Weeks since 2014. The voters observe the bears and decide which one to vote for. Before and after pictures are required. The voters also describe the bear they chose. This year, a bear named Chunk won. Chunk weighed 1,200 pounds at the end.

People were worried about Chunk at the beginning, though. Chunk had a broken jaw that possibly came from a fight. This might affect Chunk’s ability to eat. However, it didn’t stop him from eating more. According to News for Kids, “it’s a strong sign that he’ll be able to survive despite his broken jaw.”

Gaining weight is also very important for bears. When a bear hibernates, it doesn’t eat anymore. It survives on the food it ate before hibernating. Gaining weight could also help bears survive. A bear could use its size advantage in fights.
Chunk the bear continues eating healthy and gaining weight. He didn’t let his broken jaw stop him before, and he isn’t going now. Still, Chunk and the other bears are unaware that they are being watched. They are unaware that Chunk has won Fat Bear Week.
