A brilliant idea was created by a 12-year-old from the United Kingdom. Rebecca from Glasgow created a solar-powered backpack that had her acknowledged by the first-ever Time magazine Girls of the Year, alongside nine other girls. She came up with the project because of her sympathy for homeless people sleeping on the streets during the winter. After seeing many homeless people, she wanted to help and thought that this problem should be fixed. She thought of a backpack that also had an electric blanket. Her thought was that during the day, the sun would power the solar panels that are located in a battery pack. Then it would store power, and when it’s night, the homeless could use the energy stored in battery packs to charge their devices. This would help since during the night, it is freezing in Glasgow.
Rebecca had this idea when she was participating in an engineering club. She topped in the UK Primary Engineering competition, where 70,000 others were competing, while addressing social issues. An engineering company made this design come to reality and gave out 30 blankets to the homeless.
In honor of this, a U.S magazine made Rebecca into a mini LEGO figure. She has made an incredible invention and has inspired many across the world. Rebecca’s invention shows how creativity and compassion can come together to solve real-world problems. Her work highlights the importance of young voices in innovation. She has proven that age is no barrier to making a lasting difference.
