ISRAEL PUSHING GAZA CITY TO HUNGER
A city called Gaza City is blocked from food, water, and medicine from entering the area by Israel from early March to mid-May. Israel’s stated goals are to destroy Hamas’s military and governing power in Gaza and to stop Gaza from being a future threat to Israeli communities. Many people were going hungry, and the United Nations warned of the risk of famine for everyone living in Gaza.
ALJAZEERA states that “About 28 Palestinians and many more wounded after Israeli warplanes dropped a large number of bombs on Gaza’s European Hospital.” Some quotes show the strength of the people in Gaza and call for action against Western pretense. They also call for using legal means to end the suffering and save lives.
People from Gaza said Israel has killed and injured people, forced families from their homes, withheld aid to control them, and attacked civilians and places like hospitals and schools. Quotes describe severe hunger in Gaza caused by closed crossings and limited goods, calling it a form of warfare. Parents say they can’t provide basic food for their children. There are also reports of violence during aid distribution.
There have been numerous rounds of conflict and military operations, including missile attacks from Gaza towards Israel and Israeli airstrikes and ground operations within Gaza. The blockade, damage to farming and fishing, and limited aid have led to severe food shortages, especially among children. The World Food Programme USA says, “Everyone in Gaza is facing serious food insecurity, with many experiencing the worst levels.”
Since 1967, Israel has taken over Palestinian land, including the Gaza Strip. In 2007, Israel increased its blockade of Gaza and split it from the West Bank. Israel says the blockade stops Hamas from bringing in weapons. Critics say the blockade punishes everyone in Gaza and breaks international law. The UN still sees Gaza as occupied by Israel because of how much control Israel has.
Israel’s military actions and policies in the situation in Gaza have caused a serious and growing humanitarian crisis, with many people forced to leave their homes, facing hunger, damaged important buildings, and the possible breaking of international laws.
