Record-breaking Lightening Streak is Recorded by the US
In October 2017, and found it was the longest streak in history, zooming from Texas to Kansas City.
s record in 2020 was 768 km, which happened in Texas, too.
Sometimes, lightning records will change due to new technology. In 2022, a lightning bolt that lasted for 17.02 seconds in South America, while usual streaks are a second long, according to the New York Times.
Lightning forms in the clouds, where ice bits collide, forming static electricity. If the charge is strong enough, then the energy will either zoom to another cloud or the ground, which forms the flash we see in the sky.
The lightening strike was recorded by satellites. Lightning used to be measured by special sensors on the ground, but newer technology requires special satellites called ‘orbital satellites’. These types of satellites can measure lightning from space, and will stay in the same position while recording. Then, they are able to track the lightning as it spreads across huge distances.
If you ever encounter lightning, you must remain calm and stay inside.
