CONGRESS DECIDING ON TRUMP’S NEWEST RESCISSION
This week, the US Congress will decide whether to implement Trump’s $1 billion cut to public radio and television. This is in contrast to the $3.3 trillion “Big Beautiful Bill” that Congress just passed.
The cut is from a series of rescissions ordered by Trump on June 12th, 2025. A rescission is an effort to take back money that the government has approved. A rescission has a 45-day deadline for approval. The deadline of this rescission is this Friday, July 18th, 2025.
This rescission targets $1.1 billion worth of cuts from the CPB, the Corporation of Public Broadcasting. U.S.The CPB is a non-profit organization established by the US government in 1967 to help support public radio and television. The CPB is best known for its Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) TV network and its National Public Radio (NPR) radio network. The networks created by the CPB do not carry ads and are supported by donations and government funding. Crucially, these networks can service remote areas where it is hard for locals to access news and emergency services.
However, Republicans have always complained that the news reported on these public stations is not fair. Republicans have already led various efforts to cut off funds from the CPB. The cut would not remove PBS and NPR because these networks receive sufficient support from donations. However, other networks would not be so lucky. These networks depend entirely upon federal government support. The cut would cause the shutdown of these less well-supported networks.
The fact that Trump is attempting to force changes with rescissions is most uncommon. However, guidelines for rescissions are not as strict as those for new laws. This ease of placement means Trump will find it easier to push through the changes he wants.
There are many opinions about the new rescission. Democrats believe that it will be hard to trust Republicans with the latest cut. Meanwhile, some Republicans have concerns about Trump’s new rescission. However, Trump threatens that he will not support these Republican senators in the future if they do not support him.
Assuming the Senate passes the bill by July 18th, the House of Representatives will need to approve it again.
