After President Donald Trump’s continuous expansion threats and trade wars, Canada begun exporting to Asia to widen their trading partners due to the controversy with Trump’s declaration.
Trump’s threat declarations upset Canada not only because their land will risk being bought and reclaimed but also because the tariffs ordered by Trump to be put on Canadian goods. On February 1, 2025, a twenty-five percent tariff was placed on all Canadian goods. Due to Trump’s actions, Canada does not feel the need or desire to sustain their current trade relations with the US.
Trump’s undesirable suggestion of wanting to turn Canada into America’s fifty-first state creates strong conflicts throughout both countries. “If you look at Canada, they would be cherished as a fifty-first state,” stated Donald Trump, President of the United States of America. In Canada, almost all citizens are furious and upset by this news because of the many changes it would bring to their lives.
These claims made by Trump motivates Canada to shift away from their natural gas trade with America. Canada attempts to reroute trade to Asia by exporting goods to Asian buyers for the first time on July 1, 2025.
As reporter Ian Austen explains in an article from The New York Times, “For Canadian companies, exports to Asia offer an escape from the low prices for natural gas in the saturated North American market.” As a result of how the United States has handled Canada’s gas exports in the past, Canada has found it also more beneficial to their economy to trade with alternative countries.
Trump’s tariffs and unwillingness to establish consistent trade relations with Canada have also created doubt in other countries about the permanence of trade agreements with the United States. As seen in Canada’s actions of moving away from connections with America, this is the outcome due to Trump’s harmful threats.
