The One And Only Ivan Book Review
I just finished The One and Only Ivan by Katherine Applegate, and my heart is still catching up. This book didn’t just tell a story. Instead, it made me feel every word. The book was released on January 17, 2012. Ivan promises to help Ruby have a better life. He uses mud and crayons to create pictures, at first simple, then more meaningful, eventually spelling out a clear message: “HOME.” Ivan manages to get the attention of the humans and finds a way for both Ruby and himself to move to a zoo, where they could live happier and healthier lives.
There were many things that I loved about this book, but most of all, I loved Ivan’s care for his friends. He keeps his promise to Stella by making sure Ruby will have a better life without chains and exhausting performances. He cares for Bob by letting him sleep on his belly, even though Bob could be a bit annoying, especially when Ivan dreams about eating a furry doughnut. And he truly cares for Ruby by watching over Ruby and comforting her when she’s scared. Ivan even used his paintings to send a message to people, showing that animals have feelings too and deserve a better life.
The only part I didn’t like was how Mack treated the animals. He forced Ruby to perform tiring tricks, and when she refused to move, he hit her with a handkerchief. It left me feeling both upset and heartbroken. I don’t think animals should be kept in cages or forced to perform.
Overall I give this book 4 out of 5 stars, but I would give it a full 5 if the ending had explored more of Ivan’s life after the zoo move. Through Ivan’s Journey, the story teaches us about the power of friendship, showing kindness to others, and standing up for what’s right. Most importantly, it reminds us humans to appreciate animals and care for them as an important part of our world.
