Amanda Anisimova Defeated in Wimbledon Final
On July 12th, the Wimbledon Final Match was played in London. Iga Świątek beat Amanda Anisimova by 0-6. This gave her a very first Wimbledon Champion title, and her sixth Grand Slam title. She is currently the only active WTA Tour Player to hold the Grand Slam title on all three surfaces.
It is always challenging for new Grand Slam Finalists like Anisimova, since Świątek has been on that stage five times before that day, but Anisimova is new to this match. She kept telling herself that this was like any other match she had played in order to calm her nerves, yet when she stepped onto the line to serve… it didn’t go in. Anisimova’s famous backhand even began to fail.
In addition, all while these serves were missing and the hits were going wrong, the Princess of Wales was watching from the crowd in the royal box with her daughter. The nerves were clearly getting to her and affecting her performance, while Świątek, on the other hand, was hitting back at everything and missing nothing. It’s quite understandable for Amanda Anisimova to have been feeling this way. This match was a Grand Slam Final, a Wimbledon Final, and with the Princess of Wales watching. The feeling of being there is intense, and it’s different.
Ida Świątek knew that her opponent’s greatest strength was her backhand hit, so she targeted it from the beginning of the match. She kept Anisimova off-balanced and out of the court with angled backhands that broke the side-lines (past the lines of the painted court). This strategy was particularly effective, since she was known to have one of the best inside-outs. The fact that she kept attacking the backhand also showed Amanda Anismova that she didn’t fear her, nor her advantageous move.
In the end, both players thank their coaches, teammates, and family who have supported them in their tennis careers, and both are planning to continue their goal to improve for their next match. Despite Anismova’s loss, she had still made an amazing breakthrough during this tournament to get where she was, including a win against the world’s No. 1, Aryna Sabalenka.
