Island Games
Every other year, a game takes place in the member islands, which are part of the International Island Games Association (IIGA). These games feature 12 sports with people from 24 island groups participating.
From its beginning in 1985, the Island Games were designed to help different island communities foster connections and to showcase their talent on the Olympic stage. The first event was held on the Isle of Man and only had 15 island communities participating. Each team would send down their athletes, coaches, and fans to compete.
The Island Games include many sports events, some of which include badminton, shooting, cycling, triathlon, and track and field.
Not only do the games serve as a way to compete and see who comes out on top, create lasting friendships.
This year, the games will be held in Orkney, which is the second time ever that the Island Games have been held in Scotland. The event was opened last Saturday in Kirkwall, the biggest town in Scotland. After the ceremony, will occur in Orkney.
