KAMALA HARRIS STEPS FOOT IN THE POP MUSIC WORLD

As soon as President Biden announced that he wanted Vice President Kamala Harris to take over his presidential campaign on Sunday, July 21st, everyone on social media started talking about her in every format possible; from music mashups to iconic quote compilations, she was the talk of the town.

Supporters started releasing edits of Ms. Harris, as well as mashups of popular songs with audio from speeches. Songs used include those by Charli XCX, Taylor Swift, Chappell Roan, and many more artists.

Charli XCX’s latest album, “Brat”, is also trending all over the internet, with many saying they are living a “brat girl summer”. The signature green album cover is iconic, and Charli herself has posted about the Vice President, saying that “kamala IS brat”. The official Harris campaign account on X changed its header to match the color and font of the album.

Many more celebrities and influencers are also showing Harris their support. Rapper Cardi B reposted a video of herself saying that Harris should have been the Democratic nominee all along. “Been told y’all Kamala should’ve been the 2024 candidate,” she said in the caption.

The online community is going crazy over the Kamala Harris remixes, with people in the comments saying, “Put this on Spotify NOW!!!” and “Hope this gets to [be] my Apple ringtone”.

”You think you just fell out of a coconut tree?” is Harris’s most popular quote at the moment, along with her iconic laugh. She had been talking to the White House Initiative on Advancing Educational Equity, Excellence, and Economic Opportunity for Hispanics and quoted her mother. She followed the iconic sentence, saying “You exist in the context of all in which you live and what came before you.” In the rest of the speech, she was highlighting the importance of focusing on the younger generation as well as the people around them. Thus, the coconut emoji along with the palm tree emoji is now used to refer to her presidential campaign.

The Columbia Journalism Review is even saying that “Harris is winning social media in a way Biden never could (at least for now)”. Her increased popularity can greatly impact the race, giving her more visibility and engagement from her supporters. Trends and memes fly around the internet at the speed of light today. With the short time that she has to prove herself worthy, her marketing team is utilizing this time. By creating content online and showing the more “human” version of Harris, who is full of laughs and giggles, voters can see that they are seeing someone with emotions, not just a robotic politician like past candidates.

Because she is younger than most candidates, her target audience is younger as well. Social media is effective at reaching younger voters and can be pivotal by the time elections come around. Trump’s age also reflects on his audience, as he addresses topics suited for older people such as corporate tax cuts and immigration restriction.

Meanwhile, Harris’s main ideas include making healthcare affordable and making women have more freedom. She has also spent decades fighting for gun violence protection, even going to events to talk to university students about their views on school shootings. This is showing how she wants to target a younger audience because their votes count too.
