Catastrophic Tragedies in Central Texas
In Central Texas, on July 4th, a massive downpour of rain caused a huge flood that resulted in 111 deaths, with many being children. On Friday, at 4:03 am, the river beside an all-girls summer camp in Kerr County started to swell with rain. Citizens report having witnessed as much as 15 inches of rain. Rescuers have been making massive efforts to find and rescue those who were harmed during the natural disaster.
The flood was believed to be caused by heavy rainfall. This is most likely caused by climate change, which causes more moisture to build up in the air. In addition, Texas had recently experienced a long drought, and when the rain finally came down, the ground wasn’t ready to absorb the water, forcing the rainwater to the nearest place it could go: the Guadalupe River.
During midday, the flood hit hard in Kerr County, where the Guadalupe River is located. The heavy rainfall forced the river to overflow and flood the shores. Unfortunately, Camp Mystic, an all-girls summer camp, was directly next to the winding lake. The Guadalupe River was reported to have risen over 29 feet when the rainstorm hit. The summer camp had about 750 attendees, and several of them were found to be dead or missing. The devastating impact of the flood left the camp in ruins, and hearts broken.
Thankfully, more than 850 people have been rescued from the harsh waters, with the help of helicopters, horses, boats, trucks, and many volunteers. According to the New York Times, the cleaning and opening of roads will be made by officials, and federal assistance sent by Trump will also help with the recovery efforts. However, despite all the efforts, hope is fading for the ones that stand unaccounted for in the flood. Sgt. Jonathan Lamb of the Kerrville Police Department says that his county’s final search for survivors was made on Friday, and several other search groups are starting to give up on looking for life in the remains of the catastrophe.
The Texas flood was heartbreaking, striking on July 4th at 4:03 am, right next to an all-girls summer camp. Though massive efforts are being made to rescue more lives, the tragedy has stuck a place in the hearts of many. “It’s gonna be a long road ahead, but right now the shock, the pain, and the chaos need the steady hand of a neighbor,” says Matthew McConaughey and Camila McConaughey.
