A volcano in Indonesia just erupted, setting off a gigantic amount of ash and smoke into the skies. Let’s take a closer look at this event.
Mount Lewotobi Laki Laki the (male) twin peak of the Lewotobi volcano erupted at exactly 5:35pm local time on Tuesday, unleashing a 11km high ash cloud. Residents report to have heard loud rumbling coming from the mountain.
From a video uploaded by the Indonesia National Agency for Disaster Countermeasure (BNPB) on the 17th of June, the ash cloud is gray orange colored, mushroom shaped, and seems not to be expanding, but is, instead, frozen in place.
According to BBC News, there have not been reports of fatalities or injuries. Authorities have advised residents and tourists to stay 7km away from the volcano and be alert. Two villages near the volcanic eruption site were evacuated for safety due to the danger of heavy downpour that could provoke lava flows in rivers and also debris. As stated by BBC News, “Residents were also urged to wear face masks to protect themselves from volcanic ash.”
Tourists Athirah Rosli and her husband’s flights from Bali to Singapore were canceled overnight due to the eruption. She said her first reaction was panick, but then she calmed down. “I see it was a blessing in disguise that we’re safe and well.”
Dozens of flights from airlines were canceled that day. For example, flights from Air India, Air New Zealand, Jestar, Singapore Airlines, Virgin Australia, and Juneyao Airlines, both landing and departing from Bali were affected.
According to AP News, “Indonesia’s Geology Agency said in a statement it recorded the volcano unleashing 10,000 meters (about 32,800 feet) of thick grey clouds on Tuesday afternoon, following significant volcanic activities, including 50 in two hours, rather than the usual daily 8 to 10 activities.” The data collected shows that the seismic activity suggests that it was abnormal, compared to the data from the “usual daily activities”.
Overall, the eruption of Mount Lewotobi Laki Laki has had significant amount of impact on tourists and local residents and their homes. Currently, authorities are still investigating and organizing the volcanic issue and mess.
