Taylor Swift spend an estimate of $360 million to buy back her music
Taylor Swift, a famous American singer/songwriter has fought legally to own all of her music for about six years, but On May 30, 2025, she bought back her rights over her music, therefore now having the freedom and giving her control over every single one of her musical creations.
In 2019, Scooter Braun, the Founder and Chairman of Ithaca Holdings LLC, purchased Taylor’s first six albums that were released by Big Machine Records for an estimated amount of $330 million through a music deal, therefore giving Braun and his company (who is also part of the HYBE America portfolio, a South Korean entertainment lifestyle platform company) full ownership of Taylor’s creations.
These songs were later acquired by Shamrock Holdings, meaning that they would receive all the profit provided from the songs before Taylor recently spent about $360 million to buy back her control over her music.
After six long years, Taylor has finally regained her control over her music that she has worked on throughout her whole career but has never fully owned, and has stated in a letter written to her fans last night that “she’s been bursting into tears of joy.” During the time that she was not in charge of her music, she had been re-recording her first six albums from an timeline starting around April 2021, to the most recent, in October 2023. These albums were labeled Taylor’s Version so that Braun has no control over them. However, now she has both her music renamed as Taylor’s Version and her original music in her possession.
The albums that were sold to Scooter Braun in a musical deal worth a fortune were “Taylor Swift” (2006), “Fearless” (2008), “Speak Now” (2010), “Red” (2012), “1989” (2014), and “Reputation” (2017) were not only her first musical creations but they also have a deep personal meaning for her as well.
Taylor has also said that she is “still in shock that all the music she has made, everything now belongs to me.”
