On Friday, August 9th, 2024, a Brazilian passenger plane crashed. All 62 people onboard died. The plane, ATR-72, was headed towards São Paulo from Cascavel, and crashed around 1:30 pm in the town of Vinhedo.
Brazil’s Air Force claimed that the plane was operating normally until 1:21 pm when it stopped responding to calls, and communications towards it seemed to be lost. Shortly after, witnesses claimed that the plane started twisting in an unusual motion before crashing.
Investigators haven’t found the exact cause for this tragedy but they have come up with theories; some say that ice stuck into the plane may have caused engine failure.
“Today ice was predicted (at the altitudes the plane was flying at), but within the acceptable range,” Voepass Chief Operations Officer Marcel Moura said.
Among the 62 victims, only 31 bodies have been recovered as of now. Many people are mourning for those who died. 8 of 62 on the flight were doctors. One of them, named Adrianne Risso, was a hardworking doctor who helped cancer patients.
“They were people used to saving lives, and now they lost theirs in such tragic circumstances,” Parana Gov. Ratinho Júnior told journalists in Vinhedo on Friday, adding that he had friends on the doomed plane. “It is a sad day.”
