Instead of practicing football with teammates, the defensive lineman of the Washington Redskins, Ryan Kerrigan, sat in the bleachers watching. He wasn’t ousted but retired. Kerrigan has played 11 seasons straight, 10 of which he was part of the Washington Redskins. He earned excellent stats throughout his career: 457 tackles, 95.5 sacks, 26 forced fumbles, 4 fumble recoveries, 3 interceptions, and 3 touchdowns.

Kerrigan publicly announced his retirement on July 29th, 2022. He is 33 years old. Although not too old to continue playing, he received poor knee reports a few months ago after tearing his meniscus, however due to his passion for the sport, he kept at it. Recently, he has finally decided to retire. Even though Kerrigan is retiring, he enjoys the sport too much to leave it. So, he is learning to become a coach.

Kerrigan’s passion of football was established in his youth. Born in 1988 in Muncie, Indiana, Kerrigan attended Muncie Central High School, where he played for the Muncie Bearcats high school football team. He earned outstanding scores which impressed others. As a result, Kerrigan earned a football scholarship to Purdue University.

There, he played for the Purdue Boilmakers football team. Earning spectacular stats, Kerrigan was selected by the Washington Redskins in 2011. That marked the start of his professional career. His first game ended in victory as Kerrigan made the 28-14 victory possible with recorded tackles, sacks, forced fumbles, etc. The following week, Kerrigan helped his team earn a 22-21 victory over the Arizona Cardinals. His stats in the first four games of the season earned him the title of defensive rookie of the month.

The last few games of the season ended up in defeat. However, Kerrigan got experience and recorded 63 tackles, 9.5 sacks, 4 forced fumbles, one interception, and one touchdown.

Throughout the years, Kerrigan made it to the top 100 players in the world little by little. In the game of the third week of the 2013 season, Kerrigan tore a crucial muscle in his left knee. Because of his passion for football, he decided to keep playing. In January of 2014, Kerrigan was forced to undergo a surgery on his untreated left knee.

Feeling better, Kerrigan kept playing. However, in 2019, his left knee started to cause him great pain, resulting in Kerrigan to miss a game and return the following week. These recent years, Kerrigan has kept up with practicing football and playing in each year’s season and earning superior overall stats.

Now, because of issues in his left knee, he is retiring. Kerrigan enjoyed the sport so much; he’s going to learn how to become a coach for the Washington Commanders.

Kerrigan’s passion for football guided him through losses, despair, and the pain of his left knee, leading him to earning admirable scores. Now, even after retirement, his passion for the sport is helping him to become a coach. Let’s all hope that Coach Kerrigan earns achievements that shine just as bright his career stats!
