For the past two years, Sydney Mclaughlin has broken her own 400-meter Hurdles world record three times. On July 22nd, Mclaughlin raced against talented hurdlers like Daliah Muhammad and Femke Bol and achieved 50.68 seconds winning her first world championship. For the indefinite future, McLaughlin’s only real battle appears to be with time: When will she break the world record next?
Mclaughlin cleared 10 hurdles in 50.68 seconds, trimming 0.73 seconds from her previous world record, which she had set a month earlier at the U.S. championships. The most intriguing of all is Mclaughlin’s optimism for improvement. “I think we’re all figuring out that, yes, there are 10 barriers, but we can run them a lot faster than people think,” Mclaughlin said, adding: “I still think that wasn’t even a super clean race.”
22-year-old Bol, who won bronze at the Tokyo Olympics behind McLaughlin and Muhammad, could be the rival who pushes McLaughlin through the 2024 Paris Olympics like Titmus and Ledecky. Ariarne Titmus and Katie Ledecky are short-distance swimmers competing for the “fastest swimmer” title.
One evident remark is that McLaughlin opened up an enormous lead by the halfway point. The last 200 meters could be seen as a victory lap. No one was remarkably close to her. “My coach thinks there’s a lot more to be done,” Mclaughlin said in hopes of breaking the world record for the fifth time.
