Sydney McLaughlin has been known for running incredible speeds in different competitions, like the 400-meter hurdle. She has crushed world records multiple times over the past few years.
McLaughlin is already an Olympic Gold Medalist, and now just last week, she broke the 400-meter hurdle world record for the fourth time in just two years! She ran 50.68 seconds, earning her the first place seat, while Femke Bol hurdled 52.27 seconds, and Dalilah Muhammad finished right behind with 53.13. Even more impressive is that she is a 23 year old American.
The sheer stats say it all. McLaughlin would have beat two women who passed into the 400-meter final last week (a different race altogether) while jumping ten hurdles. She has also passed her previous world record by 0.73 seconds, which she had set just a month earlier in the US Championships.
Since 2019, McLaughlin went undefeated when she earned second place in the 400-meter hurdle world championship, right after Muhammad. She then broke Muhammad’s world record for the 400-meter hurdle two years later, and then she did it again while winning gold at the Tokyo Olympics. Muhammad was after her, in second place, in both of the races.
She trimmed the world record farther, down to 51.41 seconds, at the US Championships.
McLaughlin also had a jaw-dropping performance in the run-up to the US Championship final, finishing in 52.17 seconds after slowing down in the last few meters. This time would have earned her the world record just three years ago.
All of these achievements McLaughlin has earned, but there is something more surprising. She thinks that she could improve and beat the record again.
“I think we’re all figuring out that, yes, there are ten barriers, but we can run them a lot faster than people think,” she said, adding: “I still think that wasn’t even a super clean race.”
