Last Tuesday, Liz Cambage, four-time WNBA All-Star and star center for the Los Angeles Sparks, declared that she and the Sparks had agreed to a “contract divorce.” This happened only five months after she appeared in the Sparks’ roster and said that Los Angeles was the place “where I want to be.”

Cambage is a 6’ 8” player from Melbourne, Australia, who averaged with 13 points per game this season. She was drafted second overall in 2011 by the Tulsa Shock, and since then, she has jumped around the WNBA trying to find the perfect team.

After Tulsa, Cambage has moved to Dallas to play for the Wings and recently, the Las Vegas Aces in 2019. Cambage has brought the Aces to two WNBA semifinals in 2019 and 2021, and later, she left the team as an unrestricted free agent.

Many of the team’s staff are puzzled as of why Cambage decided to leave. “It was a surprise — I didn’t know what really escalated it… All we can do as an organization is support that and her decisions and just move on,” said the team’s temporary coach, Fred Williams.

However, Cambage has been public about her depression and mental health issues, which both might have related to her leaving of the Sparks. She has also struggled with Covid-19, having gotten the disease three time so far.

“I have to respect what she wants. You have to listen because it could be something else, could be something that’s not related to basketball,” stated Williams, who also coached Williams back in Dallas.

We may never know why Cambage left the Sparks, but many hope she will come back better than ever, including Williams.
