Teenagers have always created many memes that we giggle and laugh at today, but none of them are as superior and as funny as the “Gentle Minions.”
Since the new 2022 movie Minions: Rise of Gru was released after seven years and sent audiences going bananas, fans have tried to make a meme based on the film. Recently a famous meme has appeared on Facebook, TikTok, and YouTube showing hordes of teenagers dressing in formal wear to watch Minions: Rise of Gru.
Teens wear suits, tuxedos, collared shirts, and ties and then march in a single file line like gentlemen, causing much shock amongst audience goers. The teens tend to be very enthusiastic, wearing sunglasses and carrying themselves with an aura that feels part businessman, part Secret Service, with a dash of self-awareness. As a result, the teens are called the “Gentle Minions.”
In one video that received nearly 170,000 likes and more than 1 million views, a large group of more than 20 smartly dressed teenage boys in Singapore ascend in a line on an escalator and then walk out of frame, stone-faced and with rigid posture. Some were pictured in the procession holding small Minion plushies while looking straight ahead. This video is famous for its simple request: “22 tickets for Minions: Rise of GRU, please.”
The “Gentle Minions” trend is going viral on TikTok and many other social apps and has gained a staggering 65.4 million views only on TikTok. Unfortunately, not all teens have been as “gentle.” Some teens committed light vandalism and disturbed families watching the movie and staff members.
In one TikTok video, a theater posted a sign that read, “Due to recent disturbances following the
#gentle
minions trend, any group of guests in formal attire will be refused entry for showings of ‘Minions: The Rise of Gru.’”
However, Universal Pictures is embracing the trend, tweeting last week, “To everyone showing up to @Minions in suits: we see you, and we love you.”
