A machine the size of a shoebox called the Biofire is keeping Australian athletes competing and Covid-clear. The Biofire machine can do a PCR test for 45 infectious diseases including Covid. It then return results in only 45 minutes or less, which means any athlete could be isolated, tested and either cleared or quarantined within an hour.
At the 2016 Rio Olympics, 94 athletes obtained respiratory illnesses, 35 had gastro and some ended up in hospital. Biofire could prevent this from happening in future competitions. “Keeping people infection-free can be the difference between no medal and a gold medal,” Institute of Sport chief medical officer David Hughes said.
The Biofire came in handy when the Australians took a team of 1000 people to compete in Tokyo–one of the country’s largest teams. No one missed a training session, and no one failed to compete. “We got them in and out of Tokyo without a single Covid case,” Dr Hughes said.
In the 2022 Commonwealth Games, the Biofire will be an extra-important feature, as unlike the Tokyo Olympics, which was help with no audiences to control infection, the Commonwealth Games will be open house. Athletes will need the Biofire more than ever to keep from getting infected and being unable to compete.
Despite the price of the machine itself $35,000, and the additional price tag of $150 for each testing pouch, which can assess up to eight people at once, many say it is worth every penny.
“I’ve heard figures thrown around that a gold medal often takes about a million dollars of investment over four to eight years, so I think it was worth every cent,” said Dr Hughes.
In these times, and probably well into the future, the Biofire machine is vital in helping athletes compete in the competitions they’ve spent years training for years. Not only can Biofire save lives, it can also save dreams. Never fear! Biofire is here!!
