Last Thursday, producer Valentina Berger announced that “Frida, The Musical” is coming to Broadway in 2024. Following Frida Kahlo’s life journey in an immersive musical, the play features music by playwright Jaime Lozano and lyrics by playwright Neena Beber that will craft the artistic life of Kahlo before the viewer’s eyes.

Frida Kahlo was Mexico’s most iconic artist, and her name is revered worldwide today. While many films, videos, books, and other forms of media have already honored her life, this will be the first Broadway musical about Kahlo’s experience.

The play’s production team promises to bring a new, refreshing look at her life, highlighting details about her that were not shared before. Taking inspiration from the book “Intimate Frida,” written by Kahlo’s niece Isolda P. Kahlo, and includes conversations with Kahlo’s family in Mexico. In addition, Frida Kahlo’s family has officially signed off on this Broadway musical, confirming its authenticity.

Lyricist Neena Beber for the musical states that: “Everyone knows a colder Frida, a suffering Frida, but she loved life. She was really, really fun. That’s what we want to portray. I used to have a sad view of Frida, like, ‘Oh, the poor woman.’ Now, knowing how she was so smart and so clever, I look up to her.”

Beber encourages the audience to see past the suffering and hardships that are too often highlighted in Kahlo’s life. Looking forward to the humor, excitement, and joy that Kahlo expressed throughout her life, this new eccentric musical will put a smile on everyone’s face and remember Frida Kahlo fondly.
