Greg Abbott, a Republican, and Beto O’Rourke, a Democrat are both nominees for the 2022 Texas Governor election. O’Rourke has raised $27.6 million – about $3 million more than Abbott. Polls are showing just single-digits between Abbott and O’Rourke, making the race the tightest and most competitive election since the 1990s.

This year, Democrats show a new fighting spirit, having hopes that maybe 2022 could be the year that Democrats would finally take office, the first time in the last three decades.

“Suddenly, improbably, perhaps unwisely, Texas Democrats are again daring to think — as they have in many recent election years — that maybe this could be the year,” remarks the New York Times.

However, inflation and the disfavor of President Biden have caught up to the Democrats. Republicans, in opposition to the White House, are assured to gain in state-races.

Recently, a poll was conducted to rank top issues. Some of O’Rourke’s supporters ranked guns and abortions as the top issues while most did not. Republicans have been trying to win away Hispanic Women with the top concern of gun control, who share interests with many of O’Rourke’s supporters.

The issue has been a concern ever since the Uvalde school shooting in Robb Elementary that took away the lives of nineteen children and two teachers. In Uvalde, hunting was regular and everybody had a gun. Now, many support stricter gun laws. Vincent Salazar, whose granddaughter was lost in the shooting, says, “Everybody has guns here. But this is different. Nobody needs AR-15s. We need to ban them.”

Inflation is also a hotly debated issue in Texas. Immigrants are slowly losing their middle-class lifestyle. Sadozai, a refugee from Afghanistan who came to Texas states, “I love this country. They need to raise the salaries. Other than that, I love it.”

Sophia Graves, a real estate agent from a nearby city said that everything was way too expensive and that she and her daughter needed relief. However, she still voted for O’Rourke because she agreed with him on abortion and gun control.

The governor election will definitely not be an easy one, as both Abbott and O’Rourke are nearly tied in votes and numbers. Some of the worst things have happened in Texas this year, not making the race easier. In November, the election will come to an end, showing the winner after the tight race.
