I was always the type of girl who would constantly make mistakes and never learn from them. I didn’t care, since I believed that every day is a brand-new start.
Today is May 14th, 2022. I walked to school, sat down, and behaved as I always did, except that today felt different. Everything felt brighter, much more silent…and emptier. It set off an eerie vibe. I started to walk around the classroom while everybody else was frozen in place.
At first, I was happy because it means I could do anything I wanted! I walked towards the back of the classroom. I stretched my arms out to lift myself onto the desktop and ended up falling off. There was nobody to save me, and nobody to call for. I closed my eyes and waited to fall to my death.
But I didn’t die.
I collapsed onto the ground with a loud thud and found myself welcomed by three people who looked rather familiar.
“Aubrey, Aubrey, you fell from the tree! Are you alright?” asked a young girl, who sounded like Mari.
“Well she’s breathing, of course she is!” exclaimed Michael, with Hero standing on the side.
They were my sister and childhood friends…But why do they look so much younger, and why does everything look so much more colorful? There were purple trees, pink floors, colorful plants…it was a never-ending list.
“What year is it?” I asked, while strolling around to check everything out, even the talking snake on the staircase.
“It’s May 14th, 2018. But are you sure you’re alright?” said Hero. He was always the nice one, and I smiled.
“So what do you want to do now?” asked Mari.
“Always the one to introduce everything, Mari,” said Michael. “How about we show Aubrey around this place?”
Everybody nodded.
And so, they travelled. They climbed up ladders leading to another planet, fought UFOs that looked like oranges, talked to pirates, and so much more. But soon enough, it was time to go.
I saw another desk just like the one I saw at the back of the classroom, but of course, I was too dull-witted to remember everything after all of the fun I just had.
With all of my energy drained out, I stretched my arms out once again, to sit on the desk, hoping that I could get back to the real world. This time, I didn’t get anywhere. I was still in the fictional world.
“Are you sure you want to go back?” asked Mari, looking quite bothered. I didn’t ask why.
Would I come to regret it? I don’t know.
Everybody else also looked bothered.
“I have to, I belong in the real world, not this place where every animal talks, everybody’s purple, and reverse mermaids exist,” I chuckled.
As soon as I finished the sentence, I found myself flying, into a black hole. A few moments later, I got back to the real world…in a graveyard.
“Oh god, what am I doing here?! Hero? Michael? Are you here too?” I asked, a little bit scared and confused.
They said nothing. Hero pointed to the gravestone behind me. As soon as I turned around, I was rendered speechless.
It was Mari’s. She was dead.
“Also, blame Michael for this idea. We just have strands of her purple hair in memory of her…,”
Michael didn’t talk back. He only said, “It was her remains of yesterday.”
Tears rolled down my face.
There was never going to be a brand-new start anymore.
