Not long ago, when Sydney McLaughlin, an Olympic gold medalist and the fastest woman hurdler of her days, was challenged when she put her foot on the starting pedestal in the 400-meter hurdles, she knew that she was facing competitors such as Dalilah Muhammad, a quick and smooth runner with a noticeable list of achievements. But that didn’t stop her. She zipped past Muhammad with speed and determination.

In the last few years, McLaughlin has set record after record. She has rendered her rivals into behind-the-scenes workers, despite their talent on par with McLaughlin. This Friday at the Championships, McLaughlin scored yet another record-breaking title, the fourth one in two years. Demolishing a 400-meter track in 50.68 seconds to win her first championship. In that record breaking race, she cut nearly a second off the previous record. What’s even crazier? McLaughlin thinks there is room for improvement!

Undefeated since 2019, McLaughlin has emerged as one of the most well-respected runners, bearing keen discipline that shines throughout her career. McLaughlin is now simply the fastest female runner of her time, setting record after record, starting from when she overtook Muhammad’s world record at the 2021 US Olympic trials. Last month, McLaughlin showed yet again another momentous run at the US championships, clocking 51.48 on the 400-meter track. Muhammad chose not to compete in order to defend her championship title.

For the future, McLaughlin will discuss her options with coach Bobby Kersee. Pointing out that there is a chance she could compete in the 400-meters or the 100-meter hurdles. She could even participate in some combination of events. According to her coach, there is much more to be done.
