Trumpet recently became the first bloodhound to win the Westminster Dog Show. He competed with some tough opponents, but was eventually able to earn the massive silver trophy.
Heather Buehner, Trumpet’s handler, was surprised at Trumpet’s win, as not only did he only begin competing in January, she also thought a bloodhound might be a bit of an underdog when next to seven beautiful dogs of other breeds. Trumpet was up against Striker, a white Samoyed who had reached the finals last year. Striker was one of the more showier dogs, receiving the most enthusiastic cheers from the spectators.
The Westminster Dog Show is typically held annually at Madison Square Garden, but due to the pandemic, has been moved to Lyndhurst for the past two years. It is traditionally signaled with Frank Sinatra singing “New York, New York” while the Empire State Building is lit up in purple in honor of the dog show.
Trumpet might have won narrowly, but the competition made it clear that he has the blood of a champion. Trumpet’s quizzical air and doleful face is a rarity in the dog show world, but nevertheless it seems he has a bright future ahead.
