Trumpet, who was the first of his breed to claim the top prize, won Best in Show at the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show. On a faithful Wednesday night, Trumpet competed against a German Shepherd, a Maltese, a Samoyed, and other dog breeds. Standing before a huge silver trophy and many ribbons, Trumpet looked grand in all styles.
“I was shocked,” Trumpet’s trainer said. “There were seven beautiful dogs in that ring. You know, I feel like sometimes a bloodhound might be a bit of an underdog. So I was absolutely thrilled.” Coming second place behind Trumpet was a winsome French Bulldog named Winston. Trumpet, who, however, was the winner, still didn’t get the loudest cheers. The loudest was claimed by Striker, a Samoyed. Striker was in the finals, only to lose to a tiny Pekingese named Wasabi. Winning still might not be too difficult for Trumpet because his great grandfather held the record for the longest dog ears. Well, an apple doesn’t fall far from a tree!
