On Wednesday, The Justice Department leveled conspiracy, wire fraud, and making false statements charges against Andrew Gillum, the Democratic candidate for governor of Florida in 2018.
As Gillum attempted to become Florida’s first Black governor in 2018, Gillum attracted widespread attention. Popular stars like Bernie Sanders and pop star Rihanna supported the rising Democratic star. But he ended up losing the election to Governer Ron DeSantis.
Additionally, Gillum was accused of lying to FBI investigators. The maximum sentence for such an offense is five years in jail. In a statement, he denied any misconduct and said that he had come close to winning the 2018 contest by one percentage point.
He claimed that “throughout my career, I have always stood up for the people of Florida and have spoken truth to power,” Gillum added. “There’s been a target on my back ever since I was the mayor of Tallahassee. They found nothing then, and I have full confidence that my legal team will prove my innocence now.”
The accusations include that Lettman-Hicks, Mr. Guillam’s confidante since college, and Gillum illegally solicited and obtained money from a number of people by making false claims about how they would be put to beneficial use. Prosecutors allege Lettman-Hicks used a business she owned to get Gillum some of the illegally earned money as payroll, which she then used for her own benefit.
In 2018, according to the indictment, there were numerous unnamed victims who claimed that Mr. Gillim and Mrs. Letterman-Hicks have deceived them. They said that they have given Mr. Gillum and Mrs. Letterman a huge amount of money, but most of the cash they donated was going to Mr. Gillum’s political Action Committee and P&P Communications.
He was charged with breaking state ethics rules in 2019 by the Florida Commission on Ethics. The Tallahassee Democrat reports that Gillum later settled the allegations by consenting to a $5,000 fine for taking a gift from a lobbyist worth more than $100.
Everything came to an end when cops discovered him drunk and unconscious in a South Beach Miami hotel room with two guys in March 2020. Although Gillum denies using illegal narcotics and was not arrested, drugs were discovered at the site. Following that encounter, Gillum sought medical attention, leading to rumors that the married father of three was homosexual. He became one of the most well-known Black politicians to come out as bisexual later that year.
It ended up being erroneously listed as an “exit vote” reimbursement in Gillum’s campaign finance report.
