Volleyball is a sport that—along with other sports, like soccer and basketball—has a lot of great players who have a lot of fans that support them. However, among these players such as Erik Shoji, Taylor Sander, and Bartosz Kurek, one player shines above. Micah Christenson strived to become one of the world’s best setters and he achieved it through many hardships.
Micah Christenson influenced me to play as the setter for my team, being a setter gives me more playing time on the court compared to some other positions like the libero, who only stays on the court for three rotations. Micah Christenson influences the people around him; he makes one of the main roles of volleyball seem so fun, and he does it well. Many volleyball players because a setter because they watched how creative you can be as a setter.
I enjoy watching Micah Christenson’s style of play because it’s entertaining and, often, successful. When you think of setter, the last thing that comes to mind is spiking. However, Micah Christenson exploits this expectation by using it to his advantage. No one will expect a 50mph ball hurtling you from the setter position. But as Ying is to Yang, Micah also provides support to his team with his perfect sets that mix up the enemy every time. I strive to be like this, to have that perfect balance of offense and defense.
I learn a lot from watching Micah Christenson play because I can observe his technique to make myself a better setter. Christenson always sets perfectly, no matter where he is on the court. He always does the unexpected too, when setting, you are expected to always use all ten fingers. But Micah uses only 6 of them. This is an example of how I learned from Christenson, however, I don’t think this is exactly why I also set with six of my fingers. This tells me that you don’t have to follow the rules to be skilled in your profession.
No matter who replaces the USA’s setter, I would still keep Micah Christenson as my favorite volleyball player. Inspiring my near future as a setter, showing off a passive-aggressive playstyle, and his learnable technique has inspired many young learners to play setter.
