Since the Russian-Ukrainian war, some Russian sports-stars have been involved in military

service. However, one Russian hockey player had signed with the Philadelphia flyers and

planned to avoid military service, and is now kept in Russia and put on charges.

Ivan Fedorov, a Russian hockey player who serves the role as a goalie, signed the Philadelphia papers, hoping to go to a roster training camp this fall. He had played for Russia in the 2022 Winter Olympics, and brought the team to win a silver medal.

A spokesperson from the National Hockey League had said that he was aware of the situation, but didn’t “comment further”

Philadelphia’s president of hockey operations and general manager, Chuck Fletcher, stated that “the Flyers are aware of the reports and are investigating the situation.”

Fedorov was about 25 years old when he was detained this Friday. He had been born in Finland, but grew up in Russia. He had also spent years with CSKA, which had ties with the Russian army.

Fedorov was reportedly arrested at the St. Petersburg hockey rink, and was taken to an army

office. In Russia, all men were supposed to serve at least one year in the military.

Now, Fedorov is recognized as one of the best goalies in the country, and Fletcher has noted it. “Ivan is a player we have followed closely and are very pleased with his development, and he’s put a number of strong seasons together in the K.H.L., culminating this year when he captured an Olympic silver medal and a K.H.L. Championship” he had said.
