After being waived two times, rookie Evina Westbrook has now been given a third chance to find a permanent career in the WNBA.
“People would die for opportunities like mine,” said Westbrook during pregame warm-ups.
Westbrook was waived for the first time after being drafted by the Seattle Storm.
Westbrook played decently before the season but was eventually waived due to limited roster spots.
Soon after her first dismissal, Westbrook was picked up by the Minnesota Lynx. However, she did not receive much playing time. With the league’s upcoming June 24th contract, Westbrook was waived once more.
Only 24 hours later, she was given a third chance: a seven-day contract with the Washington Mystics.
“… Twenty-four hours after that, I flew out.” Said Westbrook.
Westbrook knew she would have to work hard to get into one of the WNBA’s 144 player spots. In Westbrook’s 11-minute opportunity to claim her chance, she missed corner three. However, one minute later she drilled her basket for the game. Westbrook ended the game with three points, three assists and a steal while also making three personal fouls and two turnovers.
While it is not yet clear if Westbrook will be accepted onto the Mystic’s, Coach Mike Thibault, who had offered Westbrook the opportunity, said his plan is to keep offering her multiple seven-day contracts. However, in three days the Mystic’s must decide whether to keep her for the rest of the season or to waive her once more.
“I know I can give so much more, and I try to do that,” said Westbrook. “It’s just me telling myself, ‘Evina, you’re a dog. Play like that.’”
