Biden Awards the Medal of Freedom to 17 People

On July 7, President Joe Biden presented 17 different people with the highest-ranking civilian award, The Medal of Freedom, which is awarded to people who have made major contributions to this world. The group includes the famous actor Denzel Washington and Olympic Gymnastics Bronze Medalist winner Simone Biles. President Biden will also present the award to the New York nurse Sandra Lindsay, who was the first person to ever receive the Covid-19 vaccine.

The president told The Associated Press that he will be giving this medal to a selection of living and deceased winners, ranging from Hollywood actors and sport competitors to politicians and military personnel.

The White House says the honorees who will be receiving the medals from President Biden have, “overcome significant obstacles to achieve impressive accomplishments in the arts and sciences, dedicated their lives to advocating for the most vulnerable among us, and acted with bravery to drive change in their communities, and across the world, while blazing trails for generations to come.”

Another recipient of the medal will be John McCain, the Arizonian Republican who died of brain cancer in 2018.

Simone Biles, who has won 32 Olympic and World Championship medals in gymnastics, has been named as a recipient because she helped children in foster care and sexual assault victims.
