Although there has not been any direct violence on either side, China has assured the world of its capability to attack Taiwan, if necessary, in order to achieve its goal of reunification.
China and Taiwan have been on bad terms since a civil war split them apart during the 1940s. Now, Taiwan has its own sort of democracy with elected leaders, a constitution, and an active army. China asserts that Taiwan is a Chinese province, but Taiwanese leaders state that Taiwan is already an independent nation. However, most countries do not recognize Taiwan.
When asked about the possibility of China attacking Taiwan, Gen Milley, chairman of the US joint chiefs of staff, says, “There’s no indications of warnings of anything imminent at this time. But again, we watch it very, very closely”. China has already sent warplanes near Taiwan, but political analysts back up Gen Milley by stating that war is not likely at this time. This is because China wishes for a “peaceful reunification” for Taiwan. No one wants a costly war, so there has been much passive-aggressiveness from all sides.
However, if a conflict occurs, then the US must provide Taiwan with methods of defense due to the Taiwan Relations Act. US President Joe Biden has already vowed to help protect Taiwan in the event of an attack from China.
