In Copenhagen, Denmark’s capital, three people were killed, and four more were injured in a shooting.
The suspected shooter had a rifle and ammunition when arrested, police said. The shooter reportedly has mental health issues and soon will face questioning by a judge.
The shooting occurred in Field’s Shopping Center, a multi-story mall with more than 140 restaurants and shops. This attack on the mall happened while Denmark celebrated hosting the first three stages of the Tour de France for the first time.
One eyewitness named Isabelle recounted her experience to the Danish media: “Suddenly we hear shots. I think I hear ten shots and then we run through the mall and end up in a toilet, where we huddle together in this tiny toilet, where we are around 11 people. It’s really hot and we wait and we are really scared. It’s been a terrible experience.”
A concert by British singer Harry Styles, whose venue was less than a mile from the mall, was canceled. Many fans that were crowded around the venue were escorted away into underground stations where their parents picked them up.
“My daughters were supposed to go see Harry Styles,” Hans Christian Stolz, a 53-year-old Swede who came to pick up his children, told AFP. “They called me to say someone was shooting. They were in a restaurant when it happened.”
“We thought at first people were running because they had seen Harry Styles, then we understood that it was people in panic… We ran for our lives,” Christian’s daughter Cassandra said.
This wasn’t the first time a shooting has happened in Denmark. In 2015, Denmark faced another terror event, where two people were killed and six policemen were injured in an attack on a cultural center and a synagogue in Copenhagen. That gunman was later killed in a shootout with the police.
