Being the first of a kind to win a dog’s most honored title must be beyond exciting. However, Trumpet, the first-ever bloodhound to win the Best in Show award at the Westminster Dog Show, remained humble. Without saying a word, he posed next to a huge silver cup surrounded by flowers and ribbons while he was presented as the winner of the competition. Everything about him radiated “champion.”

On June 22, 2022, the 146th Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show located in Tarrytown, New York, awarded its most coveted prize among dogs to 4-year-old Trumpet. According to the organizers’ news release, 3,500 dogs from more than 200 breeds took part in the competition. The show is the second-oldest ongoing sporting event in the United States, following the Kentucky Derby.

Even though the show is normally located at Madison Square Garden and takes place in the winter, the pandemic has caused it to be moved to Lyndhurst, a New York estate, for the second year in a row. The Best in Show rounds occurred in a huge tent occupied by a small but passionate number of dog enthusiasts.

Trumpet took the trophy and beat six other finalists that included a French bulldog, a German shepherd, a Maltese, an English setter, a Samoyed, and a Lakeland terrier. It wasn’t an easy win, for most spectators rooted for Striker, a Samoyed, who was ebullient and grasped the audience’s attention with his silky white coat. However, Trumpet’s champion roots trace back to his great-grandfather, Tigger, who once held the Guinness World Record for the dog with the longest ears, having a right ear length of 13.75 inches and a left ear length of 13.5 inches.

Trumpet’s handler, Heather Buehner, described her thoughts and feelings after the bloodhound won the show, saying, “I was shocked. There were seven beautiful dogs in that ring. You know, I feel like sometimes a bloodhound might be a little bit of an underdog. So I was absolutely thrilled.” She also added that Trumpet had only completed his first-ever dog show in January.

Trumpet shocked the nation with his extraordinary features. His rise to becoming the winner of the Westminster Dog Show proves to others that it’s possible to accomplish new heights. His win will go down in history as an example for other dogs to follow.
