On Wednesday, November 25, 2020, Diego Maradona died of cardiac arrest at age 60, and left his entire nation in dismay. Thousands gathered at his grave weeping and crying for their national hero’s death. Three days of national mourning followed in Argentina, and multiple memorial ceremonies occurred. A panel of 20 appointed experts appointed to examine his death concluded Maradona’s medical team performed recklessly and inappropriately in their care of the ailing sports legend.

Diego Maradona was a famous soccer player who was the captain of the Argentinian soccer team when they won the 1986 World Cup. He also scored the famous “Hand of God” goal against England during the quarterfinals of the same game. “Hand of God” is in reference to Diego Maradona accidentally using his hand to score a goal when England’s goalkeeper rushed out to stop the ball. It was ultimately Maradona’s skill and control of the ball that allowed him to help his team win the national cup because he provided many opportunities for them to score a goal. Unfortunately, his life began to spiral out of control when he tested positive for cocaine use in 1991 and was suspended for 15 months. He later received another suspension when he tested positive for ephedrine three years later. Maradona had two heart attacks over the course of his life. And even when his days as a soccer player were gone, he remained a prominent figure.

“Even if I played for a million years, I’d never come close to Maradona,” Argentine footballer Lionel Messi said. “Not that I’d want to anyway. He’s the greatest there’s ever been.”

Many people believed that Maradona’s death could have been avoided if his medical staff were less reckless and worked more appropriately. Thus, all eight of his medical staff were tried with homicide based on negligence committed in the knowledge that it may lead to someone’s death. This type of crime can receive 8 – 25 years in prison in Argentina but the trial date is yet to be set. This trial was motivated by the complaints of two of Maradona’s daughters which were filed based on their concerns about their father’s treatment during his brain surgery for his blood clots. In contrast to what the appointed experts and Maradona’s family believed, all eight medical staff denied responsibility for his death.

During a press conference, while on the verge of tears, Maradona’s doctor, Leopoldo Luque said he had done “everything he could, up to the impossible.”
