Haotong Li, a professional Chinese golf player, won the BMW open only 10 months after he had decided to quit. Li, who started playing golf at the age of 10 participated flew to Munich a month ago to play in the Open. He had dodged the water obstacle 2 times and went in as a birdie (scoring one less than the given par of the hole) on the first hole.
Just 10 months ago, Li had decided to quit golf. He was so frustrated with his form that he just quit. After a few months, Li returned to golf. He missed the feeling of playing. Now, Li just won his first play-off in 4 years.
Li knew it was going to be a tough match. He gave it his all and hit a lot of good putts. On the first hole, he shot 40 feet past the hole. He thought he gave away the win with that blunder. But after, he made the 40-foot hole and the crowd went wild with cheers. On the 9th hole, he hit 3 good putts. On the 16th and 17th holes, he recovered by hitting birdies. But he missed a birdie putt that could’ve won the tournament. At the climax of the game, Li needed 2 more birdies to have a one-shot lead over his opponent, Thomas Pieters, a Belgian professional golfer who has earned a total of 2.5 million dollars in golfing.
Li played well and took home $358,836 in prize money. Li became highly emotional about the fact that he decided to quit golf almost a year ago, during the celebration of his victory.
Hopefully, Li continues his golfing journey and will win more playoffs in the future. Maybe things like things could happen to him more often. “It’s hard to beat a person who never gives up,” Babe Ruth said.
