The Unabomber, Ted Kacynski, who had avoided the authorities for almost twenty years, was found dead on June 10th, 2023 at age eighty-one. The cause of death was not immediately found. Many believe that he died of suicide.

Theodore John Kaczynski was an American mathematician and a terrorist. His parents were Theodore Richard Kaczynski and Wanda Dombek, and his brother David Kaczynski. Growing up, Ted was a math prodigy and skipped two grades with ease. He was then admitted into Harvard on a scholarship, and received his doctorate degree from the University of Michigan in 1967. However, he abandoned his math career to pursue a cruder lifestyle.

Ted Kacynski slowly became a skilled craftsman and used common objects to create lethal and untraceable bombs. With his bombs, he killed three people and injured many more. Often his bombs were disguised as packages and gifts. For twenty-five years Kacynski lived in a cabin he built near Lincoln, Montana. He didn’t speak to many people and traveled on his makeshift bicycle. Kacynski didn’t seem very dangerous, but in 1990 suspicions rose from those around him. In his letters, he became more and more hostile toward his family, and often wrote long rambling letters about the dangers of technology.

David Kacynski and his wife had begun to worry about Ted’s mental state. When a manifesto was published, David recognized some of the similarities between the manifesto and the long letters his brother sent. One of the startlingly similar phrases was “cool-headed logicians.”. In the end, Ted’s brother, David Kacynski’s, tip to the FBI about his brother being the Unabomber was right. He received a one-million-dollar FBI reward and donated almost all of it to those injured by his brother.

In 1996, the Unabomber was caught and put into prison, where he spent most of his time. In his small cabin off Humbug Contour Road, he had thousands of journal pages and bomb diagrams and plans. He had shelves full of bomb supplies. He even had a live bomb beneath his bed when he was caught. After he was caught, he spent over twenty-five years at the [supermax maximum security federal prison in Florence, Colorado. Kacynski later developed health problems and was moved to a prison medical facility in North Carolina. He died on June 10, 2023.
