As one out of 271 boats participating in the Big Rock Blue Marlin tournament, the crew “Sensation” brought in the biggest blue Marlin and the only one weighing more than 500 pounds. Although they should have gotten a $3.5 million dollar payout for the fishing tournament at the North Carolina coast, the Sensation’s catch was disqualified because the fish was mutilated. This means the fish would have put up less of a fight, and was therefore easier to catch.
The appearance of the gigantic marlin with an unofficial weight of 619.4 pounds made the crowds start cheering. It looked like it would be the tournament’s winning catch. The team Sensation, and their captain, Greg McCoy felt like they were definitely going to win, but when officials examined the fish, they saw a bite in the fish’s tail.
Ashley Bleau said that they didn’t see anything swimming near the giant marlin. He added that the damage was superficial. Bleau has filed a protest against the disqualification.
The crew aboard the Sensation knew immediately that when they saw the giant marlin, it would be big enough for them to win the tournament. Big Rock announcer Timmy Bennet said, “Guys, it’s really simple. If it’s more than 500 pounds, then Sensation is the winner.” But when the fish was held onto the scale, Bennet said, “It would appear that this fish has been bitten by a shark.
As people from the crowds started to scream at the top of their lungs, Bennet added that, “We’ll get it sorted out here in just a second.” Later Big Rock’s announcers said that since Sensation’s blue marlin had been bitten by a shark or some other marine animal, they were disqualified.
With Sensation’s fish ruled out, first place went to another crew called “Sushi”, who brought in a blue marlin that weighed 484.5 pounds.”Sushi” won 2.7 million dollars, falling short of the extras because they didn’t catch a marlin that weighed more than 500 pounds.
