In the past few years, AI companies have been racing to see who will be the first to unlock the full potential of artificial intelligence. President Biden has now presented them with a new challenge: safety guidelines.
Since the beginning of his term, Biden, Vice President Harris, and the Biden-Harris Administration have committed themselves to protecting the safety and rights of citizens as AI continues to develop rapidly. Last Friday, this obligation led President Biden to gather executives from the seven leading AI companies — Amazon, Anthropic, Google, Inflection, Meta, Microsoft, and OpenAI — at the White House to discuss the well-being of citizens as AI grows. Afterward, the Biden-Harris administration announced that all seven companies complied with the safety standards. The announcement was partly due to technological leaps that have prompted fears as technology becomes more sophisticated.
Biden encourages all AI companies to keep high standards so that the industry’s growth does not endanger the safety of citizens. He highlights three principles that will be crucial if AI is to be used for the benefit of humans–safety, security, and trust.
The seven companies committed to ensuring the safeness of products before they are released to the public, building AI prioritizing customer privacy and cyber security, and designating public trust.
Surrounded by the company executives in the Roosevelt Room, Biden says, “We must be clear-eyed and vigilant about the threats emerging from emerging technologies that can pose — don’t have to but can pose — to our democracy and our values. This is a serious responsibility; we have to get it right. And there’s enormous, enormous potential upside as well.”
