The wind howled in sorrow and the trees whistled a tune of misery. Animals crawled to their homes. The sun dipped below the horizon. Night was here. And so was “it”. Animals try to escape, but nothing can run away. By the end of the night, Blood dripped from its jaws.

Beyond this miserable forest was a small town called “Happy.” It was the opposite. Every citizen worked themselves to the bone to earn money to live. Families made their children, even toddlers labor. Everyone had to help work in a factory for a city up North in order to get their resources, so no one could rest. And barely anyone survives.

But Jenny, a 13-year-old from the outskirts of Happy, knows why no one lives a good and healthy life. It wasn’t just work. It was something far worse.

A cold breeze sent shivers down Jenny’s back on a normal day, while Jenny was farming for her family. Jenny was basically the detective in the town. She was good at examining things and finding clues. Everyone would rely on her if some belongings of theirs got stolen.

But on this day, she felt miserable and wanted to just give up. Jenny looked at the dark forest and thought it was a chance to escape this awful town.

Jenny trudged towards the woods where everything became darker, more miserable, and it felt like nothing was real anymore. This forest was called “Despair” and it lived up to its name.

“I’m not afraid,” she whispered to herself. “This is just another mystery that I shall solve.”

Jenny ran deeper and deeper, into the heart of the forest, where “it” had hundreds and hundreds of animal corpses and skeletons.

Not knowing any of this, she stepped on her first skeleton, which she had thought was a rock. Jenny fell into a pit of mud, or what she thought was mud. Stains, red stains, formed on her shirt.

“Beware,” the woods whispered. Jenny whipped around, thinking she was hallucinating. She carefully walked on, stepping on more skeletons and splashing through more blood puddles..

Finally, she reached the heart of the forest. A big wide circle with tree stumps around it and nothing in the center but dirt was in front of her.

Jenny cautiously walked forward and before she could take three steps, a big, hairy, brown creature appeared. It’s eight eyes gleamed, each more threatening than the last. It opened its mouth wide, revealing rows of teeth sharper than a knife.

“Humans,” it breathed. “Never tried them before. I hope the flesh is as good as all the animals in the forest. I hope the blood shows fear, the best kind of blood to go with meat. I hope the bones are fierce, the best kind of flavor.”

“W-what?” Jenny whispered, barely making a sound. And thinking how she should’ve listened to the woods, trying to find her voice, she finally screamed, running away.

But once you enter the forest of despair, you will never get out. Some say Jenny is still running today, trying to escape the reach from the monster, others say her scream was broken forever.
